NWHN celebrates 35 years and presents the third Barbara Seaman Awards for Activism in Women’s Health at the Annual Fall Fundraiser on November 3, 2010 at the Studio Theatre in Washington, DC. Please join us to celebrate with special guest Barbara Ehrenreich.

Barbara Ehrenreich is a nationally known author, feminist, and social critic who combines journalism and activism to spark lasting social change.  Barbara was an early leader of the women’s health movement in the 1970s, advocating for better care and greater access to health information. She has authored over 20 books, including Bright-Sided; Bait and Switched; and Nickel and Dimed, an exposé of low-wage work that became a national best seller. Witches, Midwives and Nurses: A History of Women Healers was an underground sensation and helped develop the women's health movement, to which Barbara continues to contribute thoughtful analysis and calls to action. Barbara has written for The New York Times, Mother Jones, The Atlantic Monthly, Ms., The New Republic, The Nation, and Salon.com; she is currently a regular columnist for The Progressive. She is a former NWHN Board member.

We are pleased to announce that the award for an experienced women’s health activist will be presented to Anne Kasper.  Anne has been an advocate, sociologist, researcher, and public policy expert on women's health for nearly 40 years. She has worked tirelessly to bring women’s voices to policy and to use policy resources to respond to women’s concerns. She was the Director of the Campaign for Women’s Health in the early 1990’s and a founder of the Maryland Women’s Coalition for Health Care Reform. She also counsels women with breast cancer for Mobile Medical Care, a clinic system that serves the uninsured, poor, and homeless in Montgomery County, Md.

Anne has been the senior editor of Breast Cancer: Society Shapes an Epidemic, and the health editor for New Directions for Women; she not only served on the editorial board of Women and Health but also authored its health and public policy column. She has completed over 30 oral histories, one of which is in Radcliffe College’s Schlesinger Library of the History of Women in America. Anne has a PhD in Sociology and a Masters’ degree in Women's Studies. She co-founded NWHN’s women’s health information services and served as the first co-chair of NWHN’s Board.
