Development Associate

The National Women’s Health Network (NWHN) improves the health of all women by developing and promoting a critical analysis of health issues in order to affect policy and support women’s decision-making. The NWHN serves as a watchdog, and engages women in policy change efforts through interconnected grassroots organizing, network building and community education. The NWHN remains true to its feminist progressive roots by relying primarily on members and foundations for contributions and does not accept financial support from drug companies, manufacturers of medical devices or tobacco companies.

Development Associate

Are you passionate about women’s health care and advocacy? Do you want in-depth experience in the nonprofit world? Are you interested in helping people all over the country advance women’s health care rights? The NWHN has an opening for an individual who is looking for a place to learn and grow in the world of nonprofits. This position is perfect for someone to jump start their career in nonprofit development in an advocacy setting.

The Development Associate will report to the Development Director and will have a chance to work at a nationally respected organization. The NWHN is a collaborative environment and you’ll have the opportunity to work with the policy, finance, communication and administrative departments as well. You’ll be able to learn about all the pieces that go into ensuring a nonprofit can fund its work, and interact with a membership of thousands.

Individual Giving

  • Assist with the monthly giving recognition program, Collective Champions, including stewardship and financial performance
  • Coordinate the Peer-to-Peer fundraising program, including guiding members through the fundraising process
  • Coordinate internal mailings to Major Donors, Planned Giving Donors and/or Mid-Level Donors
  • Assist the Development Director with the planned giving recognition program, Collective Legacy
  • Process bi-weekly acknowledgements
  • Contribute to the development plan as related to membership program, including member recruitment and retention campaigns; statistical analysis; and list management
  • Monitor board donations, including pledge status
  • Respond to member queries in a timely manner
  • Write Development pieces for the bi-monthly newsletter, blog, and social media
  • Monitor the Network’s participation in workplace giving campaigns, including the Combined Federal Campaign
  • Monitor Network print materials and merchandise inventory

Annual Awards Benefit & Health Fairs

  • Coordinate sponsorship mailing, including letter and sponsorship form
  • Assist with event registration and guest list
  • Identify, evaluate and attend outreach events, including health fairs
  • Coordinate the Network’s presence at health fairs
  • Assist with other Network event planning, as needed

Finance & Administration

  • Maintain original documentation files for all donations
  • Ensure deposit accuracy and assure deposits are made within 2 business days
  • Reconcile member/donor database to accounting reports each month
  • Submit and monitor matching gift donations
  • Provide donor and financial information to Finance Manager for annual audit
  • On an as-needed basis, serve as back-up to Officer Supervisor to process donations
  • Download daily online donations and submit report to accounting
  • Process donations on a daily basis and enter into membership database
  • Produce weekly and monthly program reports for the Development Director

Database & Web Site

  • Conduct weekly data sync between CRM and database
  • Draft, as necessary, and monitor, including updating, pages created in NetCommunity
  • On a regular and scheduled basis, run account clean-up tools including de-duping
  • Run periodic quality control data checks, ensuring high data quality
  • Add/update/maintain all code tables in database
  • Produce data for renewals, appeals, acquisition, newsletters, and events
  • Update database quarterly with National Change of Address data


  • Bachelor’s degree, preferred
  • A minimum of 1 year experience in an administrative position, preferably with a non-profit organization
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite  
  • Attentive to details
  • Ability to multitask, organize and prioritize work
  • Strong and clear writing skills
  • Knowledge of fundraising software, Blackbaud (Raiser’s Edge/NetCommunity) a plus
  • Knowledge of advocacy, health or nonprofit organizations a plus
